2. Ingredients:

  • •2 carrots, cut into thin matchsticks
  • •4 cups cooked white rice
  • 6 eggs
  • •1 English cucumber, cut into thin matchsticks (mixed with gochugaru)
  • •1 garlic clove, minced
  • •sprinkle gochugaru (red chili flakes; garnish)
  • •4 tbsp gochujang (Korean red pepper paste; Sriracha sauce okay too)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • •4 tsp sesame oil
  • •1 tsp sesame seeds (garnish)
  • •1 tbsp soy sauce
  • •1 bunch fresh spinach (or pre-packaged spinach)
  • •1 lb sandwich steaks, thin cut (any thin cut will work though)

3. Let’s Get Cooking:

Cook the rice and prepare each vegetable separately with seasonings. Sauté the ground beef until browned. Arrange the rice in a bowl, artfully place the vegetables and beef on top, and crown it with a fried egg. Mix everything together with gochujang before enjoying.

Step 1: Cook the rice

Prepare the rice according to the package directions. This will form the base of your Bibimbap. Use a pot or rice cooker to ensure perfectly cooked rice.

Step 1

Step 2: Prepare the vegetables

Cut all the vegetables into matchstick pieces. This will allow them to cook quickly and evenly when stir-fried. Place the cut vegetables in separate bowls or on a plate, ready for the next step.

Step 2

Step 3: Wilt the spinach

Bring 500ml of water to a boil in a large non-stick pan or skillet. Add the spinach and cook, stirring constantly, until wilted. Drain the spinach thoroughly in a colander and, when cool enough to handle, squeeze out any excess water into a ball.

Step 3

Step 4: Sauté the carrots

Wipe out the skillet and heat 5ml olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the carrots and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are softened, about 3 minutes. This brings out their sweetness.

Step 4

Step 5: Sauté the garlic

Add minced garlic to the carrots and cook until fragrant or slightly browned, about 1 minute. Be careful not to burn the garlic, as it can become bitter. The aroma should fill your kitchen.

Step 5

Step 6: Add cucumber with Gochugaru

Add cucumber slices mixed with gochugaru (red pepper flakes) to the pan. Stir well to combine. The gochugaru will add a spicy kick and vibrant color to the cucumbers.

Step 6

Step 7: Season the spinach

Combine the squeezed, cooked spinach with soy sauce in a small bowl. Mix well to ensure the spinach is evenly coated. Set aside until serving time to allow the flavors to meld.

Step 7

Step 8: Brown the beef

Add thinly sliced beef to a non-stick pan and cook until browned. Use a napkin to wipe down any excess grease from the pan. The beef should be cooked through but still tender.

Step 8

Step 9: Prepare the pan for eggs

Heat 5ml olive oil in the same non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Ensure the pan is evenly coated with oil to prevent the eggs from sticking. The pan should be hot before adding the eggs.

Step 9

Step 10: Cook the eggs

Add the eggs to the hot pan and cook until the whites are set but the yolks are still runny, about 5 minutes. The runny yolks add richness to the dish. Gently tilt the pan to ensure even cooking.

Step 10

Step 11: Assemble the Bibimbap

Divide the cooked rice among four bowls and top with the prepared vegetables, browned beef, and a fried egg. Drizzle each bowl with sesame oil and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Add gochujang (red pepper paste) or Sriracha sauce to taste.
